Valtrex FAQs

What is Valtrex?

Valtrex is used as an antiviral drug. It helps the body to fight the infection by slowing down the growth of the herpes virus. This medicine does not have the ability to cure herpes, but it can reduce symptoms of the infection. Genital herpes, cold sores, shingles and chicken pox are all illnesses caused by the herpes virus.

What are the benefits of taking Valtrex?

You can buy Valtrex to provide relief from the symptoms of cold sores, shingles and genital herpes within the first 24 hours of taking this treatment and can also reduce the amount of time you are ill. It inhibits the further spread of the virus, so that your body can better fight off the infection. This helps you to recover much quicker, and will make the condition much less uncomfortable and painful.

How does it work?

Valtrex is a pro-drug, which means that it is only converted into its most active state when it's inside the body. The main ingredient is valacyclovir hydrochloride, but, once ingested it becomes the fast acting active ingredient acyclovir. It helps combat the virus by preventing a viral enzyme, known as DNA polymerase, from helping the virus duplicate itself and spread from one healthy cell to another. This allows the virus to be driven back into a dormant state quicker by the body's immune system.

Who can use Valtrex?

Most people over the age of 18 who require treatment for cold sores, shingles or genital herpes can buy Valtrex safely. It should usually be taken when you first notice symptoms, but the treatment can be taken as a preventative treatment for genital herpes, to stop sporadic painful outbreaks.

Who can't use Valtrex?

Although this medicine is generally safe for most people to use, it is not recommended that people with kidney or liver conditions use this treatment. It is also not advised to use this treatment if you suffer from immune deficiency disorders such as HIV. Make sure to mention if you are pregnant or breastfeeding during your consultation as a doctor may recommend an alternative treatment. This treatment may also not be suitable if you suffer from depression. It is important to mention any other information relevant to your health or medications you may be taking.

How do you take Valtrex?

This medicine should be taken in different dosages depending on the type of infection you want to treat:

  • To help treat cold sores, two 500mg Valtrex tablets need to be taken for either three to five days (for recurrent outbreaks) or for up to ten days (if you are experiencing an outbreak for the first time).
  • To treat shingles, take two Valtrex 500mg tablets three times per day for seven days.
  • For genital herpes, take two 500mg tablets each day for up to ten days if you are experiencing your first outbreak. You will only need to take the tablets for three to five days if you are treating a recurrent outbreak. If you want to use this medication as a preventative treatment, then you should take one 500mg tablet each day.

Does Valtrex cause side effects?

People who buy Valtrex usually do not experience side effects; however, some people tend to be more sensitive to the ingredients in this treatment than others. The side effects are normally mild and include nausea and headaches. Some of the less common side effects are abdominal pain, painful periods, vomiting, dizziness, joint pain and depression. If you are taking this medicine for the first time you are more likely to experience side effects because your body isn't yet used to the ingredients, however, your body will eventually adapt if you are using it for more than a day.
