Seretide FAQs

What is Seretide?

The chances of an asthma attack are drastically lowered when using Seretide. This prescription medication contains two main ingredients, fluticasone and salmeterol. The active ingredient fluticasone belongs to a category of medicines called steroids. Inflammation is lessened with the use of steroids. The active ingredient salmeterol belongs to a category of medicines called long-acting beta agonists. The air passages in the lungs are relaxed when Salmeterol is used. The collaboration of these two medicines helps the airways to keep open, making it easier to breathe.

Seretide is used to relieve people from attacks of breathlessness or asthma. If an attack has already started, this prescription medication will not relieve you of your symptoms straight away. To relieve yourself from an attack of breathlessness, you will have to use your fast-acting reliever inhaler.

What are the benefits?

Many asthma patients can benefit from using a preventer treatment as it reduces the chances of an attack and limits the use of a reliever inhaler, such as Ventolin. Preventer treatments give patients peace of mind and helps to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. This asthma treatment is available in 2 different types of inhalers, so that you can choose the most convenient for you.

These inhalers also have a unique design that is highly suitable for asthmatics that have difficulty with traditional ‘spray’ inhalers. They also have an indicator that shows how many doses of medication are left, which makes replacing your treatment before you run out easier.

The Seretide Evohaler contains the medication in a pressurized canister, which requires you to push down as you inhale in order to release the medicine into your respiratory system. It works in a similar way to most reliever inhalers, but it has the added benefit of a counter to tell you how many doses are left. The Accuhaler contains the medication in powder form and releases a dose before inhalation, making it easier to use for some people. It has a counter, which will warn you when there are only five doses left.

How does it work?

Seretide contains salmeterol xinafoate, a bronchodilator that clears the airways to facilitate breathing. Its other active ingredient is a corticosteroid known as fluticasone propionate, which has anti-inflammatory properties that limit the inflammation of the lungs. The combination of both elements can lead to a big reduction in the number of asthma attacks and for some patients they can disappear altogether.

Who can use it?

Most asthma patients can safely use this prescription treatment without a problem as long as they are not allergic to any of the active ingredients. This includes salmeterol and fluticasone as well as lactose monohydrate in the Accuhaler and norflurane in the Evohaler. If you suffer or have suffered from tuberculosis (TB), high blood pressure or heart disease, this may affect your suitability for treatment. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that you mention in your consultation if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or if you are taking any other medications or have any other illnesses, as it may not be the most effective treatment for you.

What dosages are available?

The Seretide Accuhaler is available to buy in doses of 100mcg, 250mcg and 500mcg whilst the Evohaler comes in 50mcg, 125mcg and 250mcg doses. If you choose to purchase this treatment, your doctor will tell you which dose is most appropriate. Do not increase your dosage without consulting with your doctor, as the medication will not take effect for a few days.

How do you use the inhaler?

You should only use the medication as prescribed and as instructed by a doctor. The Seretide Accuhaler has a lever to release the medication before inhaling, whereas the Evohaler is a canister, which requires manual pressure during inhalation. When you receive your medication you will find a leaflet with instructions on how to use your inhaler. If you are still unsure, consult with a doctor, nurse or pharmacist, as they will be able to demonstrate.

In terms of dosages, exact dosages will depend on the severity of your asthma, but in general for adults and children it’s one inhalation twice per day. Do not increase your dosage before consulting your doctor.

Are there any side effects?

As with any prescription medication, some patients may experience side effects from using asthma treatment. The most common side effects are headaches, aching joints, muscle pain and increased number of colds. Some people also suffer from infections to the mouth or throat, which can be prevented by brushing your teeth straight after using your inhaler.

Rare side effects include tachycardia (fast heartbeat), muscle cramps and behavioural changes (particularly in children). If you have difficulty breathing or wheezing after using the medication, or have any of the rare side effects, straight after using the inhaler you should discontinue treatment immediately. You would also need to consult your doctor straight away about any interactions you’ve had in order to be eligible to buy Seretide.
