Each tablet uses the active ingredients metformin hydrochloride and vildagliptin, which work by helping the body produce more insulin and less glucagon.
- Effective treatment for noninsulin-dependent diabetes
- Reduces the amount of glucagon produced
- Tablets come in a 50mg/850mg or 50mg/1000mg dose
- Suitable treatment if condition has not been controlled by metformin alone
What is Eucreas?
Eucreas is an oral medication used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes. This type of diabetes is also known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
This oral medication contains two active ingredients called: metformin and vildagliptin. These two active ingredients are responsible for controlling and regulating the amount of sugar (glucose) levels in the blood.
What are the benefits?
Eucreas works to control blood sugar levels by helping the body to produce less glucagon, while increasing the production of insulin. As well as controlling blood sugar levels, Eucreas has also been found to reduce blood sugar, which could potentially help prevent complications that arise as a result of the condition.
This medication is often prescribed to those who have taken the highest tolerated dose of metformin alone, or have taken vildagliptin and metformin as individual tablets, and not experienced sufficient results.
You can order this diabetes treatment online from euroClinix after completing an online consultation. If you are suitable for this treatment, then your prescription will then be passed on to our registered pharmacy, and the treatment will be sent out free of charge for delivery the next day.
How does it work?
Each Eucreas tablet contains the active ingredients metformin hydrochloride and vildagliptin. These ingredients work together to help to control blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. Metformin works to reduce the sugar levels that are produced by the liver. It also reduces the amount of sugar that is absorbed by the body after you eat. As a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, vildagliptin helps to prevent the production of glucagon (the hormone responsible for the production of glucose). It also helps the pancreas produce more insulin and to counteract the production of glucose. All of these measures help to control blood glucose levels, in particular between meals and after you have eaten.
The active ingredient
Eucreas tablets contain two active ingredients, metformin and vildagliptin. The combination of these two medicines helps control the blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
People with diabetes mellitus face a deficiency or absence of the hormone produced by the pancreas called insulin. Insulin is the main hormone responsible for regulating and controlling the sugar (glucose) levels in the blood. In type 2 diabetes the body produces insufficient insulin and the cells in the body are resistant to the low levels of insulin produced in the body. In a majority of cases insulin makes the cells within the human body remove sugar from the blood; hence in type 2 diabetes blood sugar levels can rise too high.
Who can take Eucreas?
Eucreas is suitable for people with Type 2 diabetes and for whom metformin alone or vadagliptin has not been able to control blood sugar levels. Eucreas is not suitable if you are allergic to metformin, vildagliptin or any of the ingredients found in this medication. This will also be the case if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have diabetic ketoacidosis, complications with diabetes, have had a heart attack, heart failure, blood circulation problems, breathing difficulties, kidney or liver problems, then this medication will not be suitable. Similarly, if you have a severe infection, are dehydrated, drink alcohol excessively, or are due to have a contrast x-ray than Eucreas will not be prescribed to you.
How should you take it?
It is essential that you take this medication as prescribed. Eucreas is available in either 50mg/850mg dose tablets or 50mg/1g dose tablets. The dose prescribed will depend on how well the medication controls your blood sugar. Your doctor will decide which medication dosage is right for you. In general the starting dose for this medication is 50mg/850mg, and you should take one tablet twice daily with a glass of water in the morning and evening. Tablets should be taken with or just before a meal to avoid the risk of an upset stomach.
If you forget to take a tablet, then you should take it at your next meal unless you were due to take the next tablet then. Do not take two tablets at once to make up for the missing dose (double dose). If you do take too many tablets then you should contact a doctor immediately.
Are there any side effects?

Common side effects with this medication may include, nausea, vomiting, headaches and dizziness. Less common side effects may include constipation, hypoglycaemia and swollen hands and feet.
